My son is eight years old and loves golf. We havent been out much this year yet because he is finishing up baseball. He is already almost five feet tall and is almost out of his junior clubs. I’ve heard both ways but what would be the advantages/disadvantages of getting him hitting with a set of womens clubs? Whats the big difference? Its been suggested to buy a big set of mens and get them cut down is that a good idea or not? He is like 4’10 almost 11" his doctor said he will easily top 6’5"
The only real difference between proper men’s and women’s clubs are the shaft flex and length, as they figured out a long time ago that the head-weights needed to remain the same.
Just randomly-cutting down men’s clubs is a bad idea, it was a bad idea when I was a kid and it’s still a bad idea today as it results in all sorts of bad swing habits that are hard to cure later. Cutting down a men’s set of R-flex shaft to fit him now is commiserate to you trying to x-flex shafts in your own irons.
So, and expecially if you think your son will continue to play the game, is to buy him a name-brand set but in women’s flex shaft being as women’s clubs are shorter on average than men’s sets. This should take him until he gets to be over 5′-6," and then you can take them to a clubmaker and have them install a set of men’s regular flex shaft in them….. which should last him for years, being as someone needs to be well over 6-3 to require the use of over-length clubs.
