Does Golf stand for Gentleman Only Ladies Forbidden?

I’ve heard that this is what golf stands for, but does it really? I think the word has origins from other languages, am I correct in thinking so? I’m not too keen on the sport, just wondering.

Once again this tired old urban legend pops its head out. No it does not stand for anything……It is simply the name of the game.

It may well have been an accusation levelled against golf in the past but ladies now have equal rights in the majority of clubs. A few remain segregated but these are very few and far between, fortunately.

An old saying. This was way before women started playing.

gentlemen no longer have priority on the course over ladies not even over juniors which is just as well cos most juniors are better players anyway as I,ve found to my cost with my grandson
